PAPERS RELATING TO THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF THE CHANNEL ISLANDS 30 June 1940 – 9 May 1945

Another speciality comes about as our base for operations is located in the Channel Islands who were captured by the German armed forces on 30 June 1940 and held them until 9 May 1945.

We hold sets of the 3 local papers as well as a quantity of London newspapers for the same period.

The unique feature is that the German occupying powers did enforce the daily reporting of news from the Fuhrers’ headquarters through which news from the German supreme command was printed everyday in English, the language of the island for islanders living under the occupying Germans.

Their censorship of the day by day news was additionally added to by the various daily propaganda broadcasts to Britain by William Joyce known as Lord Haw-Haw.

So for anyone interested in this period we have several extensive sets available,including The Guernsey Evening Press,The Star(Guernsey),and The Jersey Evening Post,(See below).
